  • the male birth control pill - (MBC)...

I have opened this thread here, as much valid thought on this topic was being wasted in another, sadly troll-like, thread.
Please feel free to use this thread to document findings of any research, support or opposition, on this topic...

(It may be an idea to open a new thread for each the various categories of research in this area, or have the forum mods generate a list of relevant tags, which could be used as categories...)

its the one with Dr Coutinho talking about how feminists stopped development of the male pill.
The only thing that resembles "The Patriarchy" these days is Feminism itself.

Theobservator posted this in the last thread. Thought it might be good for those who want to investigate more. If he sees this, maybe he could add some links or explain them in more detail..?

RE: Why I do not support the male pill...
Most MBC pills do not work by hormone shenenigans.

Gandarusa, for example, works by disabling an enzyme on the sperm head so it cannot penetrate the cell wall of an ovum.

The Isareli pill works by disabling a protein required for sperm formation.

RISUG is an implant that shreds sperm by using a positively charged polymer that disrupts negative charges on sperm.

Its hard to believe most women wouldnt be all for a male birth-control pill. I should think it would make women of child-baring age lives a bit more easy! So, if the feminists indeed fought this, I can only presume its because they KNOW that many men DONT want or need babies, and they fear a male pill will cause a severe population drop. Of course, the other reason might be: CONTROL. As their reproductive mantra states, "Our body, our choice!" it is no wonder they want to keep reproductive power in THEIR hands.

It's all a bunch of bullshit. I have just as much of a right to decide when, how, and with whom I become a father as a woman does when deciding to become a mother. I't is disgusting. Why can't people see this?

MBC would be ideal. In the meantime, freezing sperm and getting a potentially reversible vasectomy is in my opinion the best way to go.

I don't know. There are, or were, a few things running through my mind re: Dr Coutinho's cotton-based (Gossypol) male birth control pill (MBC).

              1. As he himself said, he found Betty Friedan's opposition surprising (06:20 in vid), followed by the usual feminist herd mentality surging through her supporters, all opposing him.
(Note also that the he refers to "Budapest" where he meant "Bucharest" - 1974 World Population Congress.)

              2. I can't see any reason to question his claims that the Brasil Health authorities declined his application for Gossypol-based MBC, with no reason given - but as he had invested so much time and research, his frustration is understandable. (and his 'bias' , likely ...)

              3. Problems with gossypol as a MBC are noted in http://malecontraceptives.org/methods/gossypol.php , where it seems a.) hypokylaemia (low potassium) - a condition which is normally the result of kidney malfunction - arose, and could not be compensated-for in animal experimentation, b) Further research in China found azoospermia (infertility) remaining for up to 3 years after trials ended, at the Chinese dosage levels used , and c) WHO felt that as even Dr.Coutinho's lower dosage levels were only 10 times below known toxicity levels of Gossypol, this was reason enough to discontinue research.

              4. Production costs would be extremely low, and as the technology is "low-tech" there would little, or no commercial incentive for pharmaceutical companies to develop a Gossypol-based MBC...

Here is an article where WHO abandons a hormonal programme, due to far higher levels of undesirable side effects: http://www.conrad.org/news-pressreleases-63.html

                -------------------------------------------------

here is a site summarising various research thrusts:
(dunno if it's being recently updated... most recent link seems to go to a 2011 article)

                http://malecontraceptives.org/news.php

(I've encountered quite a few other research articles, more along targeting males' reproduction-specific gene expression, over the past few months ... will track 'em down again if I have the opportunity)

                Update 16h56:

ah, seems that http://malecontraceptives.org/ was formed by Dr.(?) Elaine Alice Lissner, who now has the Male Contraception Information Project online, and is seeking crowdfunding for "VasalGel" (licensed name for RISUG in USA).

I picked this up from her reply to an article http://alumni.stanford.edu/get/page/magazine/article/?article_id=55985,
                • I'd also like to thank Kirsten Thompson and Joe Wielgos, who started MaleContraceptives.org and brought the subject to greater prominence online. MaleContraceptives.org was for many years the top site for information about new methods. Kirsten also helped me get the Male Contraception Information Project online, and we worked as collaborators for a number of years, our two organizations (Male Contraception Information Project and the Male Contraception Coalition) putting out newsletters together 2006-2010[...]

And here, we see her acquired-licence product ("RISUG" developed in India, rebranded "VasalGel" in USA) being promoted ... http://techcitement.com/culture/the-best-birth-control-in-the-world-is-for-men/#.USpAS1cbL-B
(sadly, the writer decides to include a statement that RISUG/VasalGel might also destroy HIV ... - not strictly true...)
